Once again it was our Lions friend Harald Dräger who has already done so much good for the home for elderly people in our city who has initiated another activity in order to improve the quality of living in the house. The lightning in the staircase was not adequate at all especially for elderly people but it actually was dangerous to use the stairs-even during the daytime. Harald Dräger generated funds so that our Lions club could hire a professional electrician who substanially improved the lightning in the hallway.
On January 21, there where meeting with our coordinating Lion Fabian Rüsch.
On the 31st of August 2010 German gospel choir “Sound of Joy” was visiting Valmiera and giving a concert in the culture centre of the city. The sonority of the choir was enriched with a live playing band so that for an hour and a half the culture centre main hall was full of positive music and sounds. At the end of the concert audience didn’t want to let the performers go and they were called to come back 3 times, which was a really pleasant surprise for the choristers.
This year the same as last one election of new chairpersons was held electronically which has been accepted by all members as some LEOs are not living in Latvia anymore, some are in summers camps and some are just travelling around. Luckily the members living abroad are as active as always.
On 24th of October in the whole world including Latvia was the International Day of Climate Action. The unifying symbol of that day was number 350. Why 350? Because it represents CO2 350 parts per million in the atmosphere which scientists have said is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to keep the climate of the earth as it is. Individuals and organizations came together to support the opinion and demand governments to change their policies.
On 25th of July with wellies on, working gloves in the pocket members of North Latvia LEO club were ready to go and help Aleksandrs Lazarevs and Broks family to implement their project. Our task was to clean the banks of the river from bushes, fill the holes on the road with stones and also to destroy the dams made by beavers. In total 7 dams were pulled down!
In the morning of 7th of February LEOs were again gathering together. This time we were heading to the direction of Zemgale – crisis centre “Namiņš” in Auce where we delivered clothes and shoes gathered by us and also by our families and friends.
