LEO participates in the worldwide environmental campaign – 350!
On 24th of
October in the whole world including Latvia was the International Day of
Climate Action. The unifying symbol of that day was number 350. Why 350?
Because it represents CO2 350 parts per million in the atmosphere which
scientists have said is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere to keep the climate of the earth as it is. Individuals and
organizations came together to support the opinion and demand governments to change
their policies.
Campaign and the
visual material gathered from all over the world is planned to be used as a
media when communicating a global demand to decision makers which will gather
in UN Climate change meeting in Copenhagen, December 2009. In total people from
181 countries were participating organizing approximately 5200 events
(additional information www.350.org).
The event LEOs had in mind was cleaning the
banks of Ozoliņupīte river which actually already started in the summer when
LEOs were helping an active young man Aleksandrs Lazarevs and Broks family who
were organizing an environmental project with financial support from “Fund of
Valmiera district” and Mortgage bank. The river Ozoliņupīte is located in the
Valmiera district direction of Mazsalaca, almost next to lake Burtnieks. Since
summer when LEOs were helping for the first time until autumn almost the entire
pedestrian path was finished.
When we started thinking how
to make the symbol 350 Aleksandrs came up with a great idea – that we could use
the small trees that were cut down to clean the river. The idea was to put the
stumps in the ground in the shape of 350 and then in the spring new tress would
start blooming from them. Now LEOs are planning to make a sign with additional
information why the small trees are exactly in the shape of 350! (October
2009)
