With the support of PDG Knud Loekkegard (106 C) Latvian Lions received a donation of 1,5 tons of LEGO bricks from LEGO Charity to be handed forward to kindergartens and schools for handicapped children and those in the rural areas. The activity was a big success because it brought so much joy to more than 4000 children who are now enjoying these educational toys every day.
Lions friends from Denmark and Germany found donators for 60 used bedside tables, 20 hospitalbeds as well as a big amount of medical aid for the home of elderly in Pavilosta, western Latvia. Moreover raised Lutz Baastrup,Vice District Goveneror (111N) 2000 EUR in order to cover the transport costs. The staff and inhabitanst of the home were very happy for this donation and support.
Every year during Christmas time and the Easter holidays we pack grocery gifts for 26 people suffering from various handicaps and deliever them to their homes. Many of them we have been visiting for more than 15 years and therefore were able to follow up their lives and the lives of their families.
Once again it was our Lions friend Harald Dräger who has already done so much good for the home for elderly people in our city who has initiated another activity in order to improve the quality of living in the house. The lightning in the staircase was not adequate at all especially for elderly people but it actually was dangerous to use the stairs-even during the daytime. Harald Dräger generated funds so that our Lions club could hire a professional electrician who substanially improved the lightning in the hallway.
Shortly before Christmas we invited the residents of "our" home for elderly people to a childrens choir concert.
The choir of Liepajas Central Elementary school who has sucessfully participated in various competitions was donated gowns for the girls by our Lions club.
In cooperation with LCs from England, Belgium, Germany, Italy we were able to renovate a recreation room in one of the homes for elderly people in Liepaja. This enables the residents to come together for playing games, doing handicrafts, working with the computer or simplying enjoying company.
